Movie Likes
- 70s horror films
- Favorite directors: John Carpenter, David Cronenberg,
Stanley
Kubrick, the Coen Bros. (At least, this week)
- Lucas/Spielberg blockbusters, esp. Star Wars,
Jaws, and Close Encounters (entertainment and art are
not mutually exclusive)
- His DVD player
- Animation in all forms
- Shamelessly silly comedies
- Futuristic dystopias
- Film scores (and not lousy pop songs)
- Remakes that actually improve on a lukewarm original (The Fly,
The Thing)
- Illustration as movie poster art
Movie Dislikes
- Bad TV shows remade as even worse movies
- Dull, talky "indie movies" in which nothing happens, praised because
they were financed by credit card
- Films that aren't cinematic (we do have other art forms, like stage,
TV, and radio)
- Phony upbeat endings (too easy)
- Phony downbeat endings (too cynical)
- Actors' portraits as movie poster art
- Trailers that give away all the plot points
- "Classic rock" in film scores
- Dubbed foreign films
- The general obsession with opening grosses, production budgets,
and stars' salaries
