Psycho (1960)
The horror film series starring Anthony Perkins
"I have seen the movie Psycho once. Up until a few months ago,
I never wanted to see it It seemed to me that Psycho was an ancient
film (well, it's twenty-three years older than I am!) with its only
good feature being a shower scene that, well, everyone now knew about,
so there wasn't much point in seeing it. But, one Friday night I decided
that, yes, I would watch Psycho... I wouldn't argue that Psychos
II (1983) and IV and especially III don't match up
to the original over two hours of film. However, after thirty seconds
of seeing Psycho III I was hooked - I went back to Psycho and
watched the four films within the space of a month." [More ]
The information given about Anthony Perkins' character Norman Bates'
past varies between the films. Of course, it could be that these are
simple mistakes in the script, but it also outlines how little it matters
whether he was twelve or sixteen when he killed his mother. Norman Bates,
to me, has always been about an eternal crisis of identity between the
teenage Norman, Mother and the adult Norman who looks after Mother.
He, and the movies, are not about how he got to be this way, although
considerable time is devoted to it, especially in Psycho IV: The
Beginning (1990). [More ]
