Sir Alec Guinness
Movie Picks
'Great Expectations' (1946) David Lean's legendary adaptation
of the Dickens' classic which introduced Guinness to cinema audiences
in the role of Herbert Pocket.
'Oliver Twist' (1948) Again directed by Lean, this time Alec
was in the starring role of Fagin.
'Kind Hearts and Coronets' (1949) The lack comedy with Guinness
famously playing eight members of the D'Ascoyne family (females as well
as males!).
'The Ladykillers' (1955) One of my favourite Alexander Mackendrick
Ealing comedies. I don't know what made a bigger impact, Guinness' performance
or those memorable large teeth his character had!
'Tunes of Glory' (1960) As Lt. Col. Jock Sinclair in a movie
that never fails to make an impression on all who see it.

'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957) His Oscar® winning
performance as Col. Nicholson. Though with typical modesty he declared
"I don't look back on it as a great performance".
There are many, many more films I could have mentioned (see the Photo
Galleries for stills and publicity shots from some of them)
and I'm sure you too have personal favourites. So please join us in
the forum as we pay tribute to Sir Alec by remembering the joy his performances
have given us throughout the years.
