Rutger Hauer
Born: 23rd January 1944
Country: Holland
Occupation: Actor, Director, Producer
Quote: "Forget the happy ending. I didn't even like the fact
that Deckard ran off with Rachael at the end. Deckard loving replicants
didn't make any sense to me. Frankly, I thought Deckard was a little
sick, because he ran away with a vibrator that looked like a woman"
Rutger Hauer is that rare beast - a European actor (and by this
we're not including Britain) - who made it in Hollywood.
Okay, admittedly that maybe isn't that strange. What is strange is
that, unlike some other Euro actors, Rutger Hauer made it there on acting
ability. As Rutger himself has said: "Look at me. I'm not Bruce Lee."
Before he got to America, he was the most popular actor in Holland
- his film debut Turkish Delight became a bible for a generation
of Dutch teenagers. When Hollywood beckoned, he went there, but apart
from a few mainstream movies for big studios, has mainly worked for
independent outfits. And this is why we like him - he's always done
his thing, his way. And done it well.

Blade Runner (1982) : The one everyone remembers - Rutger's
breakthrough role as troubled Replicant leader Roy Batty. The
white hair was his idea and many of his lines were improvised. The main
problem with this role is that he may never better it.
Ladyhawke (1986) : It could be said that the role of Etienne
Navarre was one Rutger was born to play. He certainly looks the
part and although this film is played to death on TV stations, it is
one that is impossible to hate.
Escape From Sobibor (1987) : The one Rutger Hauer movie you'll
ever find in a History classroom. Rutger plays Russian Jew Sasha Pechersky
to perfection and evokes real sympathy for the inmates of Sobibor, a
Nazi concentration camp.
