DVD is no better than Video
An argument for DVD
Posted by: timsicle (TBRANAN)
The only thing VHS tapes have over dvd is recordability.. and I'm not
terribly concerned with that personally, cause I don't record much,
and its not like I threw out my VCR when I got a DVD player.. if you
are (you meaning general you, not a specific you) just a general undemanding
movie watcher, then probably no need for you to jump into DVD.. though
for the record, DVD has been out for about 2.5 years, so its not shiny
and new anymore. if you like movies, and want the best movie watching
experience you can get, then DVD is the way to go..
VHS:
Recordable
250 lines of resolution
Dolby pro logic surround (at best)
DVD:
Wide screen (almost all movies are available this way, which for me
if very important, I hate pan and scan versions of movies)
Chapter stops
No rewinding
Special and added features like audio commentary, deleted scenes,
bloopers, productions notes, copies of the script, concept art, screen
tests, and dozens of other things.
Double the resolution of VHS (as tv's get bigger, this becomes very
important)
Dolby digital surround sound and/or DTS (HUGE difference in the way
you experience a movie. listening to a movie in stereo and then in digital
surround is like a deaf person suddenly being able to hear)
Multiple languages
Multiple audio tracks
Sub-titles in multiple languages
You can buy a decent DVD player for the same price as a good VHS player..
the cost of the DVD's themselves are the same as tapes, generally 15-20
dollars.
Personally, for me it was a no-brainer decision. I've been a laserdisc
fan for years and bought my first player in 1988. DVD is everything
I loved about laserdiscs with cheaper prices, no flipping and better
sound, at VHS tape prices.
Not everybody cares about movies like I do, I'm not telling anyone
they should get a DVD player if they don't want to, but if you are a
big movie buff, then there really isn't any reason not to get one, you're
really missing out by not owning a player. in 10 years of buying laserdiscs,
I now own about 130 discs.. in 2 years of DVD ownership, I own about
85. That's almost the same amount in 1/5 the time frame. DVD has taken
off like a rocket since it debuted and I for one am glad that we finally
have a format that is more than just a niche market like the laserdisc
was, and finally allows movies to be shown in all their glory, instead
of a poor approximation like VHS does..
Sorry if I was a bit long winded, but I see a fair amount of DVD bashing
here, and that's fine, I know I certainly enjoy a good argument, (provided
it doesn't spiral down into a flame war) but I prefer that it be done
with all the facts, and not just because of some odd bias or ignorance.
Granted, its not for everyone, to really watch them right requires
you to invest in a good tv, surround sound decoder, six speakers and
an ungodly amount of wire strung around the house.. :)
Cost is certainly an issue, and not a small one.. I got around it by
buying my system one piece at a time over the years and upgraded and
added various components until I ended up with a home theater setup
that isn't too shabby..
Need a new tv, though.. Got my eye on the Sony trinitron vega xbr 36inch
models. anyone got one of these?
